RAYMOND PETTIBON

All the best bands have iconic logos. These marks proceed the ink and paper to become a set of values and understanding.

There are 4 black bars that come together to form a waving black flag, a cultural icon that evokes the emotion and political struggle of hardcore music in the 1980s.

Long before I knew who Raymond Pettibon was, I knew the Black Flag logo. An instantly recognisable cultural icon. As powerful and culturally important as it is, there is much more behind Pettibon.

What draws me these works is the simplicity of carefully chaotic black strokes on a stark white paper that come together to build a sometimes disturbing comic like image paired with an ironic line of text.
