Culture Connect: Creative Expression was a self-initiated documentary created to support a Vans go-to-market meeting while exploring a much broader idea: how the brand could connect more authentically with the creative communities that inspire it. Originally conceived as a recurring YouTube and social series, the project was developed independently before being adopted as part of the GTM presentation.
To bring the seasonal theme of Creative Expression to life, I travelled to London to interview creatives whose work reflected the culture surrounding Vans. The film featured photographer Casper Masi, self-taught shirt maker Tom of Epoca Blue, and Olli Appleyard, vocalist of post-hardcore band Static Dress. Through documentary-style conversations, the film explored their creative journeys, the challenges they had overcome, and the motivations behind their work, creating a more human connection between the collection and the communities it was designed for.
The project began as a personal initiative rather than a commissioned brief. After developing the concept and pitching the format internally, funding was secured to produce the film for the GTM meeting, where it was used to inspire regional and sales teams. The success of the project also led to a follow-up interview series featuring additional creatives, further exploring the idea of storytelling through real people and real experiences.
